A Dutchy in the UK

on . Posted in Blog

This coming November will mark my 4th year of living in the UK and it has flown by. When I finished my studies in Tourism a couple of years before coming over, I was already playing with the idea of travelling abroad and gain experience working elsewhere. However, I did not have the UK in mind to start off with. I was mainly thinking of Spain, Portugal, Greece (aka ‘mainly’ nice weather countries). I wanted to also be able to speak the language and not be too far away from home. Then when I was watching an episode of Two Pints of Lager I thought perhaps the UK might be a good destination as I speak the language and it is “around the corner” from home. So, there I was about 3 months later moving to the UK not knowing that 4 years later I would still be here.

The first thing that I had to get used to was the ‘English Accent’. Although in and around London it is not the most difficult accent it was still a challenge at times. I was, however thought to be American for the first couple of years here in the UK (which really is from watching American movies and series on telly). Once I figured out that the accent where I live (Buckinghamshire) is one of the “lightest” English accents, I was happy about the fact that I had cracked it and wasn’t struggling anymore. Now almost 4 years later I am ok with most accents even Irish and Scottish however the occasional Northern accent still gets me at times. This is where I can pull my ‘sorry I am foreign and English is not my 1st language card’ out of the bag and I am forgiven for keep on saying “Sorry?” “What?” “Pardon?” “Huh!?” I have now however apparently transformed my own accent to slightly Irish as this is now usually the first guess for most people who I meet for the first time.

Why is scheduling so important?

Have you ever asked yourself, what does it take to be successful? What more do I need to do in order to experience my ‘lucky break’. Any successful entrepreneur will happily tell you that success is a combination of a variety of different elements…To name a few: hard work, perseverance, time management skills, ability to set realistic but stretching goals…and the list goes on! However one element that tends to get overlooked by the masses is that of having the ability to schedule…To invite a positive balance into your life. The more balanced our life is, the happier and more fulfilled we feel, the happier we are, the more inspired we become, the more inspired we are, the better work we accomplish etc. My aim in writing this article is to bring to light six positive outcomes that are a result of having a consistent but flexible schedule.

    1) Enjoy more free time

      There is a great misconception that those who keep to a schedule are very restricted. That they don’t have what is known as ‘down time’ or time to relax. However this couldn’t be further from the truth! It has been proven that those who schedule their days are more able to accomplish their tasks in a shorter amount of time, leaving more opportunities to take regular breaks throughout the day. However the more productive we become, the more we tend to fill our ‘free time’ with more wholesome activities, such as reading etc.

Technology An Advancement…Or Perhaps Not?

Technology an advancement… or perhaps not?

I am an 80’s child… well I was born in 1970, BUT the 80’s was when I grew up!! The 80’s was a great time to be a kid, i had a reasonably simple but happy life.. you have seen all the posts on social media;

Click if you were an 80’s child because; You played at the park until it was dark, went out all day on our bikes and bought a 10p mix up at the local newsagents.. Tesco had small shops and the carrier bags were free  etc etc ..

17 years ago something changed and not just me passing the milestone of moving out of my 20’s and into my 30’s.. how I would love to go back and look at myself in the mirror… not just because I had less wrinkles or grey hair but also to give my younger self some advanced warning! Tech is going to change the way you communicate and live your life!

I have 5 children born between 1990 and 2007 (my wife has kindly confirmed the years are about right).. #gooddad
