It's about that time of year! Drawing to the end of another year...Now you may either be smiling back on the memories of the departing year, or you may be glad to see it go! Either way, I hope you are waiting with eager anticipation, excited to see what this brand new year may bring. Another year means another chance, a fresh start! What's not to love?
Now we seem to have a culture that when we see a new year in we write a list (either mentally or literally) of things we either want to start doing or things that we want to stop doing. For example, lose weight, go to the gym more, start going to the gym, learn a new skill, be more organised, be healthy etc. etc...It really is an exciting time, and we truly do start every new year with the words "This year will be different" "This year I will stick to my resolution!" Now, maybe you are fantastic already at keeping your New Years Resolution...in which case I doff my hat to you! But for the rest of us mere mortals, I have 7 steps that will hopefully assist you in your endeavors to keep whatever resolution you settle upon this year! Happy Reading :) And Happy Holidays!
1) Pick One!
Now I know the new year really does only come ONCE A YEAR! And as humble as we are, there are just so many things that we would like to change...however, take things one at a time. Don't be so hard on yourself! Chances are, you are far more likely to succeed if you pick one thing that you are going to stick to this year! I mean, come on...if we pick 10 resolutions, we're pretty likely going to end up forgetting half of them! So do yourself a favour and just pick ONE.
2) Make a plan
Ever heard the quote: "Failing to prepare is preparing to fail."? The best way to ensure failure is to not think ahead. If this really truly is something important to you, do everything you can to make it a reality! Do yourself a favour! If you want to lose 10 pounds...how are you going to do it? If you are going to go on holiday, when are you going to go? How are you going to pay for it? "A goal without a plan is just a wish." Don't leave your resolution as just a wish, but make it a reality.
3) Pick a start date
You don't need to necessarily start on New Years Day! I mean come on...if your goal is to eat healthily and you're surrounded by all that leftover deliciousness from the holidays you're not being kind to yourself. You may have more willpower than I do, but that just seems cruel. Remember...we want to succeed! So pick a date, any date. But a date that you will remember and that you will stick to. Also, decide how long this resolution is going to last. Are you planning on remaining to live this goal as long as possible (well done you!) or does it have an end date? Plan that well in advance so you have something to work towards!
4) Consider possible problems
Don't assume that this will all be smooth sailing. Anything worth having takes time and a whole lot of effort. There may be days that you really don't want to continue striving towards this goal! Have a plan in place if and when you hit that bump in the road. Think out scenarios that could possibly occur, and then think about how you could solve them if the situation arises.
5) Plan rewards
What you are doing is a big deal! And I bet it's not going to be easy...so plan rewards! Give yourself that motivation to continue living your resolution. Acknowledge that it is hard, and give yourself that pat on the back and extra motivation that you deserve. (Tip: obviously if your resolution is to give up chocolate, a box of Lindor probably isn't the best idea...)
6) Don't be discouraged
If by some chance, you do slip up...don't worry! These things happen. It really isn't the end of the world. Pick yourself up and keep on going! The worst thing that could actually happen is that you fall down and stay down. There is nothing worse than giving up on your goal, if you do stumble then don't say "ah well, I’ve failed! No point carrying on now..." you're better than that!
7) Give it your all!
Don't do things half-heartedly...if you're going to do this, give it your all! Make it your best year yet! Only you are standing in the way of not accomplishing this goal! As long as you follow the previous 6 steps your pretty much home free! Now, it's going to be hard, but it will be so worth it in the end. Give it everything you have and don't look back.
With Christmas and New Years just around the corner, now is the PERFECT time to start thinking about your goals and what you want to achieve this coming 2018!! Merry Christmas everyone, and a Happy New Year!
